This past summer, my Mama decided to she wanted to bring back our families knack for gardening. In a matter of months, our front yard exploded with cherry tomatoes as far as the eye could see, all kinds of peppers from Thai chili the size of your pinky nail to big belle peppers, and our kitchen was oh so grateful.
The summer was filled with fresh salsa, gourmet ketchup, salads, sun-dried tomatoes and pretty much anything you can make with peppers and tomatoes. If you haven’t ever experienced garden fresh vs. store fresh- there’s no completely explaining the absolute “it” factor that comes with homegrown. This quaint garden fed all of us some of the best summer meals we could imagine, and fueled my Mom’s basil addiction like no other (the Italian blood runs thick).
Ka’ knew all the tricks- and speaking of Italian- she would spray the plants with garlic water and planted marigolds lining the front to keep the bugs and squirrels away. I had a great time laughing my head off at how Italian she looked, but not to my surprise at all, her little tricks worked like a charm.
If you have any tips or if I’ve got some gardening experts out there- be sure to comment below with your favorite gardening hacks and experiences because I would love to hear from you! So would Karen 😉
For now, garden on and eat organic when you can- which for us, is anytime we can grow it ourselves!
