Film is not dead friends. I repeat- film is not dead! Wow. May this day go down in history because this particular styled shoot is was an incredible milestone for me. This shoot I had the amazing opportunity to collaborate and work with a personal mentor of mine on shooting my first roll of medium format, 120 film! I used a Mimaya film camera, and shoot Portra 120 color film.
Besides working on my film, I got to meet one of the most gorgeous girls inside out! Rachel not only slayyeeeddd as a model, but turns out she is an incredible artist herself! Plus- she looked pretty darling for surviving in the sub-freezing temps we had her in! Bless you Rachel<3
Learning to shoot film has been a hope and dream of mine pretty much since I began my first photography classes in undergrad. The look, feel, capabilities, uniqueness, and timeless qualities of it have made it the perfect addition to my work. Especially being within the portrait/wedding industry, there is nothing that quite captures the elegance, softness, romanticism and vintage feel of film. Most of all, the way that it emulates and harnesses the light in a photo is not only breathtaking, but almost tangible. Light is something that heavily plays into my particular style as a photographer, so seeing how film handles it was enough to sell me all together!
Since this shoot, I finally purchased my very own Contax 645 and have been practicing and learning since! Making the transition and addition to film was one of the best moves I ever made in my artistic career and I strongly encourage all you photogs out there to try it if you haven’t! There’s truly nothing like it. I know these photos aren’t perfect, but they will forever mark the start of something important to me and for that, I am so grateful.
Lastly, one more huge huge hugeeeee thank you to Jessica Mae and Rachel for literally making my dreams come true with this shoot. You didn’t just “give a man a fish, feed him for a day,” you truly, “teach a man to fish, and feed him for a lifetime”.
And that is the true heart of a teacher if I ever did see one.
I will admit, I would love to lie and say my next few rolls of film on my own were as successful but…hey! That’s why it’s a learning process right? And boy am I excited to spend a lifetime learning. For now, enjoy this absolutely ethereal photos and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do because they will forever mean the world to me<3
